Case study / Hero Trainer

Gamified fitness rewards that arrive in real time

Hero Trainer is a gamified fitness rewards platform: users’ activity is tracked and rewarded, and the experience depends on those rewards arriving quickly and correctly. I designed and built the platform end to end, with React and React Native front ends and a Python, Django and Node.js backend for activity tracking, rewards and real-time synchronisation. The result was smoother reward delivery, less lag and a more engaging experience.

The challenge

Gamification only works if the feedback feels immediate. When someone finishes a workout, they expect to see it counted and rewarded straight away. If the reward lags, or shows up differently on different screens, the game stops feeling fair and motivation drops with it.

Rewards also behave like a ledger. A user should never be rewarded twice for the same activity or miss a reward they earned, and that has to hold as the user base grows and people move between web and mobile. Fitness apps are judged by how they feel, but rewards are judged by whether they are right.

Scale was part of the brief from the start. A rewards platform that copes with its first users but slows down as it grows punishes success: the more people use it, the worse the core experience gets.

Hero Trainer needed a scalable platform that could do three jobs well at the same time:

  • Track each user’s activity accurately
  • Work out and deliver the rewards that activity has earned
  • Keep every screen in sync in real time, on web and mobile

What I built

I designed and built the platform end to end. React powers the interactive web experience and React Native the mobile app, so both front ends share the same component model and the same way of thinking about state. One mental model across both platforms keeps the two experiences consistent, which matters when users switch between them.

On the backend, Python with Django and Node.js handle activity tracking, reward processing and real-time synchronisation. Django is a strong base for structured data and business rules, and Node.js is well suited to event-driven, real-time work. Using both let each part of the backend run where it fits best, rather than forcing one runtime to do everything.

The guiding principle was that the reward is the source of truth and the screens follow it. A slow phone or a dropped connection should delay what a user sees, never what they have earned, and a user who comes back should see the correct state rather than a stale one.

Real-time synchronisation closes the loop. Once activity is tracked and the reward is decided, it appears across the user’s web and mobile experience without a manual refresh. That immediacy is what makes a gamified product feel alive rather than like a form that updates later.

Building end to end meant I owned the whole loop, from the activity a user logs to the reward on their screen. That matters for a product like this. Most lag problems sit at the boundaries between front end, backend and sync, and they are far easier to find and fix when one engineer can see every side of them.

Outcome

Hero Trainer’s rewards now arrive more smoothly and with less lag, and users get a more engaging experience as a result. Activity tracking, rewards and real-time synchronisation work as one loop across web and mobile, which is what a gamified product depends on.

For the business, a platform built to scale means the rewards loop can keep pace as the user base grows, instead of becoming the bottleneck that undermines the game. And because one engineer designed the whole system, its parts fit together and can be extended without untangling competing designs.

  • Smoother reward delivery, with less lag
  • Activity and rewards kept in sync across web and mobile
  • A more engaging experience for users
  • A platform designed to scale with Hero Trainer’s users
